The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation recently awarded and recognized Hastings Public Schools as a 2014 “Best Communities for Music Education” (BCME) recipient. HPS was one of only two districts in the state of Nebraska to be named this year. Hastings previously was selected for this award in 2001.
The NAMM Foundation spotlights schools across the country for exemplary dedication to music programs, designating them as “Best Communities for Music Education”. This year, NAMM designated 376 districts, out of over 2,000 applications, as “Best Communities for Music Education” and 96 individual schools as “Support Music” Merit Award winners for offering students access to comprehensive music education.
Designations are made to districts and schools that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and greater access to music education. Now in its 15th year, the BCME program evaluates schools and districts based on funding, staffing of highly qualified teachers, commitment to standards, and access to music instruction.
The Hastings Public Schools music department offers: K-5 elementary music education, Middle School and High School vocal music programs, 4-12 String Orchestra music programs, and 5-12 Instrumental Music programs. A variety of Artist In Residence programs are held throughout the district reaching all levels of students, bringing in professional musicians to mentor and inspire students and the community.
This award is recognition of the efforts of teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders working to assure music education is part of the core curriculum. Recognition like this is a collaborative effort, so a huge collective thanks goes out to all of those who made this award possible: the HPS Board of Education, administration, principals, teachers, support staff, students, parents, patrons, Hastings College, the Hastings Symphony Orchestra, the Hastings Chorus of the Plains and the entire Hastings community.
